About this product

The Elcometer MTG2 Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge (part number MTG2-TXC) is an entry level ultrasonic gauge for taking basic material thickness measurements on steel. Ultrasonic thickness testing is a form of non-destructive testing used where only one side of the material is accessible, such as tank walls and pipelines, which makes the Elcometer MTG2 Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge well suited to monitoring corrosion and erosion before painting without cutting into the structure.

The Elcometer MTG2 Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge works in Pulsed-Echo (P-E) mode and is pre-calibrated for measuring on steel only, with a thickness range of 0.63 to 500 mm and a velocity range of 1250 to 10,000 m/s. It takes readings at a pre-set rate of 4 Hz, four readings per second, with a measurement accuracy of plus or minus 1 percent or plus or minus 0.1 mm. Automatic transducer recognition ensures the correct probe is identified even when the transducer is changed, an integral zero disc is used for zero setting, and automatic V-path correction is applied. The Elcometer MTG2 Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge is supplied with a 5 MHz, quarter inch right angle transducer.

The Elcometer MTG2 Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge is tough, impact, waterproof and dust resistant equivalent to IP54, with a 2.4 inch scratch and solvent resistant TFT colour screen with permanent backlight, an ambient light sensor, emergency light and tap awake from sleep. It runs on 2 AA batteries for around 15 hours of continuous use, operates from -10 to 50 degrees Celsius, weighs 210 g and carries a 2 year warranty. Individual readings can be downloaded via USB to a computer, and gauge software updates for the Elcometer MTG2 Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge are delivered via ElcoMaster software. The Elcometer MTG2 Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge conforms to ASTM E797, EN 14127 and EN 15317, the recognised standards for ultrasonic thickness measurement. Used in NDT, corrosion and coatings inspection, and supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

When to use the Elcometer MTG2

Use the MTG2 when you need straightforward ultrasonic thickness readings on steel and nothing more complicated. It is pre-calibrated for steel and built for basic single surface measurements with around 1 percent accuracy. Automatic transducer recognition and an integral zero disc keep readings reliable even when you change the probe.

  • 1
    Pre-calibrated for steel
Being pre-calibrated for steel means you can start taking readings without setting up velocity, which suits routine checks on steel sections.
  • 2
    Auto transducer recognition
The gauge recognises the transducer automatically, so a probe change does not risk wrong readings from a mismatched setup.
  • 3
    Tough and waterproof to IP54
An impact, waterproof and dust resistant IP54 build lets you use it in wet or dirty site conditions where a delicate gauge would not last.
  • 4
Long battery life on AA cells
Around 15 hours of continuous use on two AA batteries means readily available cells keep it running through a working day.
