The Elcometer MTG8 Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge (part numbers MTG8BDL gauge only and MTG8BDL-TXC with transducer) is the top of the range ultrasonic gauge, carrying all the features and functionality needed to measure material thickness and velocity on virtually any material across a wide range of applications. Ultrasonic thickness testing is a non-destructive method used where only one side of the material is accessible, such as pipelines and storage tanks, so the MTG8 suits demanding corrosion and erosion monitoring where large volumes of data and detailed reporting are required.
The Elcometer MTG8 Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge offers Pulsed-Echo (P-E) mode over 0.63 to 500 mm, Echo-Echo ThruPaint (E-E) mode over 2.54 to 20.00 mm for measuring through coatings, and Velocity Mode (VM), with a velocity range of 1250 to 10,000 m/s and accuracy of plus or minus 1 percent or plus or minus 0.05 mm. The measurement rate is selectable at 4, 8 or 16 Hz and resolution at 0.1 mm or 0.01 mm. Calibration covers 2-point, 1-point, material selection from 39 materials, velocity, known thickness value and factory reset, plus three user programmable calibration memories so a saved setting can be recalled without re-calibrating, ideal for users measuring several materials or thicknesses.
Display modes include readings, selected statistics, bar graph, run chart, B-Scan cross sectional view and a differential mode that shows the variation from a set nominal thickness. User definable upper and lower limits give audible and visual pass or fail warnings. The gauge memory stores 100,000 readings in up to 1,000 sequential or grid batches, with data output via USB and Bluetooth to ElcoMaster and the ElcoMaster Mobile App on PC, iOS or Android devices. It is tough, waterproof and dust resistant to IP54, runs on 2 AA batteries with around 15 hours of alkaline life, and carries a 2 year warranty. It conforms to ASTM E797, EN 14127 and EN 15317. Used in NDT, corrosion and coatings inspection, and supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

When to use the Elcometer MTG8
You are running a large inspection programme and need to measure thickness and velocity across virtually any material while keeping every reading on the gauge. The MTG8 is the top of the range model, storing 100,000 readings in sequential or grid batches with pass/fail limits. It suits inspectors who document heavy survey volumes and want graphical interpretation on the gauge itself.
- 1Stores 100,000 readings in batchesSequential or grid batches up to 1,000 in number mean you can run a full structure survey without offloading data mid-job to free up memory.
- 2B-Scan cross section on screenB-Scan and Differential display modes let you see a thickness profile across a part on the gauge, helping you spot pitting and thinning without taking the data elsewhere first.
- 3Programmable pass and fail limitsUser definable upper and lower limits with audible and visual warnings flag out-of-tolerance points as you measure, so a tired operator does not miss a failing reading.
- 4Saved calibration memoriesThree programmable calibration memories let you store setups for the materials you measure most and recall them, cutting setup time when you move between jobs.

The MTG8 adds 40 user-definable pass/fail warnings, B-Scan cross-sectional display, readings and differential display, grid batching, fixed batch size mode with batch linking, obstruct entry, 100,000 reading and 1,000 batch storage, live trend graph, and three programmable calibration memories.
What is the MTG8 measurement accuracy and thickness range?
The MTG8 measures 0.63 to 500mm in P-E mode and 2.54 to 20.00mm in E-E mode. Accuracy is plus or minus 1% or plus or minus 0.05mm. Resolution can be set to 0.01mm, and measurement rate is selectable at 4, 8, or 16Hz.
How much data can the MTG8 store?
The MTG8 stores up to 100,000 readings across 1,000 batches. It supports sequential and grid batching, fixed batch size mode, obstruct entry, alpha-numeric user-defined batch names, and batch review graphs.
What calibration features are unique to the MTG8?
Alongside zero set, 1-point, 2-point, material selection, factory reset, and velocity calibration shared with lower models, the MTG8 provides three programmable calibration memories, calibration lock with optional PIN, test calibration, and a measurement-outside-calibration warning.
Does the MTG8 support wireless data transfer?
Yes. The MTG8 transfers data via Bluetooth to computers, Android, and iOS devices, as well as via USB to a computer. It also works with ElcoMaster software for reporting and data management.
