The Elcometer 2210 Zahn Viscosity Cups are dip-type flow cups for measuring the consistency of paints, varnishes and similar liquid products. Viscosity governs how a coating sprays, brushes, levels and builds, so checking it during production or on site confirms a batch is within specification and ready for application, and catches material that is too thick or too thin before it reaches the substrate.
Each Zahn Dip Cup is a small U-shaped cup suspended from a looped wire. The cup is dipped into the product, lifted out, and the time taken for the contents to drain through the orifice is recorded as the flow time, which relates to viscosity. Five cups with different orifice diameters cover a combined range of 5 to 1840 centistokes: cup 1 (1.8mm orifice, 5 to 56 cSt), cup 2 (2.7mm, 21 to 231 cSt), cup 3 (3.8mm, 146 to 848 cSt), cup 4 (4.3mm, 222 to 1110 cSt) and cup 5 (5.3mm, 460 to 1840 cSt). Each cup is also available with a calibration certificate, denoted by the C suffix part numbers, for traceable measurement.
Measurements can be made in accordance with ASTM D 1084-D and ASTM D 4212, the standard methods for flow-cup viscosity. The cups are used in paint and ink manufacturing and coatings quality control. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.
Elcometer 2210 Zahn Viscosity Cups
The Elcometer 2210 Zahn Dip Cup is a small U-shaped cup suspended from a looped wire. This method is ideal for measuring the consistency of paints, varnishes and similar products. Simply dip the cup into the product to be measured, lift it out and measure how long it takes for the contents to empty through the orifice. There are five cups with five different orifices sizes available, ranging from 5 to 1840cSt.

When to use the Elcometer 2210 Zahn Cups
Use the Elcometer 2210 Zahn dip cup for a fast consistency check on paints, varnishes and similar products straight from the can. You dip the U-shaped cup, lift it out and time how long the contents take to drain through the orifice. Five orifice sizes cover 5 to 1840 cSt, so production and QC staff can pick a cup to suit the product.
- 1Dip and time on siteThe dip method needs no decanting or stand, so an operator can check consistency quickly during production at the point where the material is being used.
- 2Five orifices, wide rangeFive cups spanning 5 to 1840 cSt let you match the orifice to the product rather than forcing one cup onto everything, which keeps the drain time in a readable band.
- 3Recognised flow methodsIt conforms to ASTM D1084-D and ASTM D4212, giving a referenced basis for the reading when a specification calls for a standard method.

Frequently asked questions
What is the measurement principle of the Elcometer 2210 Zahn Dip Cup?
The cup is dipped into the product, lifted out, and the time taken for the contents to empty through the orifice is measured. This flow time indicates the consistency of the paint, varnish, or similar product.
What viscosity ranges do the five Zahn cup sizes cover?
Cup 1 covers 5 to 56 cSt (1.8mm orifice), Cup 2 covers 21 to 231 cSt (2.7mm), Cup 3 covers 146 to 848 cSt (3.8mm), Cup 4 covers 222 to 1110 cSt (4.3mm), and Cup 5 covers 460 to 1840 cSt (5.3mm).
Which cup should be selected for a medium-viscosity paint in the range of approximately 200 to 900 cSt?
Cup 3 (K0002210M003, 3.8mm orifice, range 146 to 848 cSt) or Cup 4 (K0002210M004, 4.3mm orifice, range 222 to 1110 cSt) would be appropriate depending on the expected value.
Are calibration certificates available for the Elcometer 2210 cups?
Yes. Each cup is available in a variant with a Certificate of Calibration (part numbers ending in C, e.g. K0002210M001C). The certificate shows readings and traceability for fixed calibration equipment.
