About this product

The Elcometer 3000 Motorised Clemen Hardness Tester (part number K3000M003) is a motorised instrument for evaluating the resistance of a coated surface to scratching, working on samples of metal, wood, glass, plastic and other hard materials. Coating hardness reflects how completely a film has cured and how it will resist marring in service; a coating that scratches under low load points to poor cure or weak adhesion, so a controlled scratch test gives an objective, comparable measure.

A tool fitted with a 1mm diameter hemispherical tip is lowered gradually onto the sample, which is then pulled linearly 60mm. The motorised action is what sets the Elcometer 3000 Motorised Clemen Hardness Tester apart: it automatically brings the tool gently into contact, moves it across the coating and lifts it at the end of the stroke with an automatic start/stop function, which removes operator variation and delivers consistent, repeatable and reproducible results. If the coating is removed completely during the test, contact between the tool and the metallic substrate is indicated by a lamp and voltmeter. Depending on the load, penetration ranges from a superficial trace to total destruction.

The load range is 0 to 5kg and the sample size 75 by 150mm, taking standard thicknesses of 0.5 to 3mm or, with the optional adjustment kit, 5 to 20mm. It operates from 5 to 40 degrees C, measures 460 by 280 by 330mm and weighs 20kg. It can be used in accordance with ISO 1518-1:2011, EN 13523-12, JIS K 5600-5-5 and AS/NZS 1580.403.1, along with BS 3900-E2, DIN 53799 and ECCA T12.

Used in coatings laboratories and quality control, it is supplied in South Africa by BAMR, the country's authorised distributor.

SKU · K3000M003

The Elcometer 3000 Motorised Clemen Unit is a robust and accurate instrument for evaluating the resistance to scratching of a coated surface. The sample can be metal, wood, glass, plastic, or other hard materials. A tool is fitted with a hemispherical tip of 1mm diameter (standard), lowered gradually on to the sample surface which is then pulled linearly 60mm.

  • Motorised operation Automatically brings the tool gently in contact with the sample, moves across the coating and then lifts it with automatic Start/Stop function for consistent, repeatable and reproduceable tests
  • Automatic contact detection If the coating is completely removed during the test, the contact of the tool with the metallic substrate is indicated by a lamp and voltmeter indicator
  • Variable penetration measurement Depending on the load applied, varying degrees of penetration of the tool into the coating are observed from a superficial trace to total destruction

When to use the Elcometer 3000 Motorised Clemen Unit

Choose the motorised 3000 when you run the Clemen scratch test often enough that hand to hand variation between operators becomes a problem. It automatically brings the 1mm tip onto the sample, draws it across and lifts it, with a lamp and voltmeter flagging when the substrate is exposed. It suits labs testing coatings on metal, wood, glass or plastic where repeatable results matter.

  • 1
    Automated test motion
Motorised start and stop brings the tool down, moves it across the coating and lifts it the same way every time, which gives consistent and reproducible results across operators.
  • 2
    Automatic contact detection
A lamp and voltmeter indicate when the tool reaches the metallic substrate, so you know the exact point the coating is fully removed without judging it by eye.
  • 3
    Works on many substrates
It tests coatings on metal, wood, glass, plastic and other hard materials, so one unit covers a varied sample mix in a coatings lab.

Frequently asked questions

What property does the Elcometer 3000 Motorised Clemen Unit measure?

It measures the resistance to scratching of a coated surface. The test is suitable for samples of metal, wood, glass, plastic, or other hard materials.

How does the test work on the Elcometer 3000?

A tool fitted with a hemispherical tip of 1mm diameter is gradually lowered onto the sample surface, which is then pulled linearly across a distance of 60mm. The applied load is within a range of 0 to 5kg.

What sample sizes and thicknesses does the Elcometer 3000 accommodate?

The sample size is 75 x 150mm. Standard sample thickness is 0.5 to 3mm. With the extended configuration, the instrument accepts thicknesses of 5 to 20mm.

What are the operating environment requirements for the Elcometer 3000?

Operating temperature is 5 to 40 degrees C. Humidity must not exceed 80% relative humidity up to 31 degrees C, decreasing linearly to 50% at 40 degrees C.
