
The Soluble Salt Meter (SSM) Salt Contamination Meter, part number HED7263901, is a hand held instrument that detects and measures soluble salt contamination on flat surfaces before coating. Soluble salts left on blast-cleaned steel draw moisture through a paint film and cause early blistering and corrosion, so quantifying them is a routine quality gate in protective coating work. The SSM was developed specifically to address problems with US Navy and IMO test protocols that use the Bresle Patch.
The Soluble Salt Meter duplicates the Bresle Patch process but with higher accuracy and reproducibility, combining surface salt extraction and conductivity measurement in one tool. The Soluble Salt Meter attaches magnetically with a silicone seal that does not affect surface quality and is proven to seal over deep pits, then injects a fixed dose of 3 plus or minus 0.05 ml of deionised water automatically. The full five-step cycle of the Soluble Salt Meter takes 60 seconds with no consumables, removing the syringe and needle of the patch method and leaving no sticky residue. The probe range is 0 to 300 microsiemens per centimetre at 1 microsiemens per centimetre resolution, with measurement accuracy of plus or minus 3 microsiemens per centimetre over a surface temperature range of 5 to 50 degrees Celsius.
The Soluble Salt Meter stores up to 1000 measurements in 10 batches and exports via USB to a PC in Microsoft Excel format for the Coating Technical File. The IP54 unit weighs 780 g and runs on a lithium-ion battery. The Soluble Salt Meter is equivalent to ISO 8502-6 (the Bresle method) and meets ISO 8502-9 (field conductometric determination of water-soluble salts).
