The Elcometer PTG6 Ultrasonic Precision Thickness Gauge (part number PTG6, supplied with transducer as PTG6-TXC) measures material thickness from 0.15mm to 25.40mm with plus or minus 1 percent accuracy, non-destructively and from one side only. The Elcometer PTG6 Ultrasonic Precision Thickness Gauge answers a common inspection problem: how to confirm the wall thickness of small, thin or intricate components, or check for thinning, when there is no access to the reverse face.
The Elcometer PTG6 Ultrasonic Precision Thickness Gauge works across three measurement modes. Echo-Echo (E-E) covers 0.15 to 10.15mm, Interface Echo (I-E) covers 1.65 to 25.40mm, and Plastic Mode (PLAS) covers 0.15 to 5.00mm, each accurate to plus or minus 0.015mm at the low end and plus or minus 0.5 percent above 3.00mm. Measurement rate is user selectable at 4, 8 or 16 readings per second, with reading resolution of 0.1mm or 0.01mm. Calibration options for the Elcometer PTG6 Ultrasonic Precision Thickness Gauge include 1-Point and 2-Point, selection from 39 preset materials such as aluminium, steel, stainless steel, cast iron, PVC and polyurethane, velocity entry and a factory reset.
The 6cm colour TFT display is scratch and solvent resistant with a permanent backlight and ambient light sensor, and the body is impact, waterproof and dust resistant to IP54. Readings transfer via USB or Bluetooth to PC, Android and iOS devices for analysis in ElcoMaster software. The Elcometer PTG6 Ultrasonic Precision Thickness Gauge can be used in accordance with EN14127 and EN15317, runs on 2 AA batteries and carries a 2 year warranty. What is the actual measurement range of the PTG6, and does it change with the mode?
Yes, range depends on mode. Echo-Echo covers 0.15 to 10.15mm, Interface Echo covers 1.65 to 25.40mm, and Plastic Mode covers 0.15 to 5.00mm, giving an overall span of 0.15mm to 25.40mm.
How accurate is the PTG6 near the thin end of a measurement?
In all three modes, accuracy is tightest below 3mm at ±0.015mm. Above 3mm, accuracy is ±0.5% of the reading. Reading resolution is selectable between 0.1mm (Lo) and 0.01mm (Hi).
Can I calibrate the PTG6 for a material that is not one of the 39 presets?
Yes. The PTG6 supports 1-point and 2-point calibration, and lets you enter the material's velocity (speed of sound) directly for anything outside the 39 factory presets. It can also be reset to the factory calibration.
How do I get readings off the PTG6 gauge?
The PTG6 transfers data via Bluetooth to a PC, Android or iOS device. ElcoMaster software handles the transfer and also manages gauge software updates.
Is the PTG6 suited to workshop or outdoor use, not just a lab bench?
Yes. It is rated IP54 for dust and water resistance and operates from -10 to 50°C. It runs on 2 x AA batteries, giving 15 hours on alkaline cells or 28 hours on lithium.
Which transducers are available for the PTG6, and what materials do they cover?
Two single-element right-angle transducers are listed: the 15.0MHz TXC15M0CM and the 20.0MHz TXC20M0CM, both 1/4 inch diameter with damping type S. Both cover thin plastics, steel, aluminium and titanium.
